Yeti Yogas: Utopia, Luang Prabang

I left Kaivalyam almost three months ago — three dismally alcohol-ful and yoga-less months.

I made a half-arsed effort to track down a class during our Southern Thailand escapades, but with classes starting at around 500B ($15), I opted for cheaper activities (beach swimming, beer-drinking, and reading, mostly) instead.

Luckily, Laos hasn’t quite learned how much they can (over)charge tourists, and on our first day in Luang Prabang, I spotted a poster advertising yoga classes at Utopia for 30,000K ($3.75).

Utopia offers both morning (7:30 – 8:30am) and evening yoga classes (5:00 – 6:30pm). At the time of writing (October 2013), evening classes were temporarily canceled, so I dragged my butt out of bed bright n’ early, and wandered along the Mekong to Utopia (see directions below).

As you can see, the location is pretty ridiculous; an open wooden platform overlooking the Nam Khan River. The class itself was great, too — Khoun, that day’s instructor, lead a multi-level class that was challenging (for my wimpy little limbs, at least), but gentle enough that the first-timers could follow along.

Getting there (taken from Utopia’s homepage): Utopia is located along the Nam Khan river on the “other side” of the Phousi Temple hill. You can get around the hill from either side of the night market / main street. Do not cross the river at any point, or you are definitely going the wrong direction! The walk is less than 10 minutes unless you stop to enjoy the views! The streets and pathways are well-lit, and you will be well-rewarded once you find Utopia!

Path #1. From the corner near the Aussie Bar, walk down the hill about 50 meters and turn left down the alleyway next to the internet cafe and follow the signs.

Path #2. Same as #1, except if you go past the internet cafe, continue 15 meters past Martins Pub, and take a left down the alleyway and turn right after the tiny bridge. If you see the gas station, you missed the alleyway.

Path #3. From Lao Lao Gardens, go across the street and down the alleyway past S-Bar. Walk across the temple grounds, down the stairs, and follow the signs to Utopia.

Price: 30,000k per 60minute class, 50,000k per 90 minute class. Pay for 4 classes, get the 5th free!
