Though it has a vague post-apocalyptic ring to it, the name is just an iteration on a snootier part of portland’s way less fun First Thursday. Last Thursday is more of a street fair, but it’s not to be confused with the similar Alberta Street Fair.
What is Last Thursday?
I could tell you that with the possible exception of Powell’s Books, there is no single greater Portland institution (probably plenty collectively, of course.) But that doesn’t really help, does it?
Last Thursday is brass bands marching in platform shoes and glitter, little girls selling pictures of foxes or poems or lemonade, women sell brownies with a nod to under the the table for the “good brownies.” It is a place of gathering, anarchy, community, creativity and gluttony. All the best things in life, basically.
Every year there is talk about this event ending. So if you are in Portland, in the summer go check out Last Thursday while you still can.
There is no substitute for being there, but check out this video of some of the many, many musical acts you can see.
